Most automotive battery containers and their covers are made of polypropylene, grids or plates are made from lead and a mixture of sulfuric acid and water is used as electrolyte.
Recycling and material recovery
97% of lead being reintroduced to the market comes from lead acid batteries, this is because of the large amount of valuable raw material contained in a typical lead acid battery. Lead has a low melting point and requires less energy to convert back to raw material than most other industial metals.
Factoids
[1]
Lead acid storage batteries account for 80 percent of domestic lead use.
