How green is DIOXIN (TCDD)?
A study of the environmental impact of DIOXIN (TCDD)
Fifty years ago, dioxin pollution was virtually non-existent. It arose in connection with the economic boom of the 60s and 70s. Levels in nature peaked in the 80s, dioxin pollution can be expected to dwindle in step with the growing number of activities targeted at combating dioxin emissions. Most dioxins are produced from materials that are burnt.
What goes into DIOXIN (TCDD)
Dioxins are produced naturally in forest fires, volcano eruptions etc but the vast majority in the environment today has been made by human activities like: pesticide/ fertiliser production, plastic production, burning municipal waste, smelting copper and burning fossil fuels.
Chemical contamination
dioxins are very stable and non-volatile substances with extremely long lifetimes in the environment. Dioxins are insoluble in water, but dissolves in fat. In nature, dioxins tend to concentrate as they move up through the food chains, accumulating in the fatty tissue of fish, mammals and humans.
Factoids
[4]
Dioxin is generally resistant to microbial breakdown. Dioxin has a very great tendency to accumulate in aquatic life, from algae to fish.
Dioxin ranks third on the list of most toxic poisons known to modern science.
dioxins can be formed when foaming agents, or surfactants, are processed with ethylene oxide or similar petrochemicals in the manufacture of many cleaning products including soap
Dioxins are a global health threat because they persist in the environment and can travel long distances. At very low levels, near those to which the general population is exposed, dioxins have been linked to immune system suppression, reproductive disorders and a variety of cancers.
