How green is a wind turbine?
A study of the environmental impact of a wind turbine
Wind turbines are one of the most controversial alternative energy sources, many people loath the site of them while others sing their praises as being part of a future green energy revolution.
What goes into a wind turbine
Much of the technology in wind turbines has been around for many years, one of the few recent improvements has been using neodymium magnets in the generators and composite materials like fibre glass and carbon fibre in the blades. Een with these new composite materials a wind turbine is 90% metal by wieght.
Chemical contamination
The only chemical contamination produced from manufacturing and operating wind turbines comes from steel manufacture and concrete manufacture. During the oporating life virtualy no contamination of anykind is produced. After decomitioning the turbine can be recycled only leaving a relativley large lump of concrete in the ground.
