How green is solder?
A study of the environmental impact of solder
Up until very recently solder contianed something in the region of 30%-40% lead depending on its use. As of 2006 a european directive put in place a ban preventing the use of lead in solder, however most electronic and plumbing solder that predates this directive still contains lead. No such legislation is in place in the United States or other countries.
What goes into solder
Common solder has until very recently been made up of an alloy of tin and lead. Due to health concerns about lead many modern solders no longer contian lead.
