How green is a REVA G-WIZ car?
A study of the environmental impact of a REVA G-WIZ car
Hailed as green transport, electric vehicles are supposed to be better for the environment than the standard combustion engine driven vehicles most of us use now. But just how green are they?
What goes into a REVA G-WIZ car
Manufacturing an electric vehicle uses about 10% less material than an ordinary car. Less engine wieght as an electrice car doesn't need pistons, a coolant system and in some cases even gears.
Recycling and material recovery
Recycling an electric vehicle is no easyer than any other vehicle, plastics, glass, rubber, and metal parts have to be removed and processed, many of which contian toxic chemicals, lithium batteries for example.
Factoids
[3]
The construction of an average car consumes the energy equivalent of approximately 20 barrels (840 gallons) of oil. Ultimately, the construction of a car will consume an amount of fossil fuels equivalent to twice the car’s final weight.
Between 600 and 700 million cars, trucks, and buses worldwide produce about about 13 percent of global man-made greenhouse gas emissions, according to the UN. Passenger cars produce about on average 125 grams of CO2 per passenger-kilometer, only 5 grams less than airplanes but nearly three times as much as trains.
Americans drive over 210 million motor vehicles 7 billion miles and consume 390 million gallons of gasoline every day.
