How green is a geodesic dome greenhouse?
A study of the environmental impact of a geodesic dome greenhouse
Geodesic domes are one of the most efficient structures that can be built, using 30% less material to cover any given volume. The dome pictured is a 4.5m diameter, 15 sqm floor area 3 frequency dome. More information here:
Polydome greenhouse
What goes into a geodesic dome greenhouse
This dome is made from localy sourced softwood that is sustainably managed and grown in the UK. the cover is polythene which is man made but only accounts for about 15% of the structure by wieght.
Chemical contamination
The only chemical contamination would be a very small amount from burning fossil fuels to cut and machine the timber frame, transporting to the customer and chemicals assosiated with polythene production.
Lifetime embodied energy
Timber structures have very low embodied energy; being carbon neutral the only C02 produced is from machining and transport to market. Locally grown and sustainable managed timber has one of the lowest Co2 footprints of any product.
Recycling and material recovery
Polythene can be recycled, horticultural polythene has a much better recycle rate than packaging materials which tend to go to landfill. The timber frame has a life expectancy of around 20 years after its useful life the timber can be used to build or repair things around the house or burnt as carbon neutral heating fuel.
Factoids
[3]
Fantastic structures geodesic domes, hurricane proof as well.
"Timber structures have very low embodied engery, being carbon nuetral the only C02 produced is from maching and transport to market. Localy grown and sustianably managed timber has one of the lowest Co2 footprints of any product." .....uh....ok so you say timber has a low Co2 footprint, but you neglect to mention that trees breathe Co2 in and breathe Oxygen out! Common sense then says that a tree is carbon negative.
Common sense also says that all the carbon absorbed by a tree is released when the tree is burnt or rots down, making them carbon neutral.
